My name is Sheila Vick and I am currently a student services teacher at École Marie-Anne Gaboury, a French immersion school in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I am also mom to two wonderful children, Elsie and Archie, and wife to an awesome stay-at-home dad, Steve. My teaching experience also includes a few years as a modern language teacher (French and Spanish) in an international school in England, and a few years teaching grades 7 & 8 in an immersion school here in Winnipeg.
I am passionate about inclusive education, parenting, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and connecting with kids. As a lifelong learner, I am always looking to better my skills and increase my knowledge in all of these areas in order to help my students, as well as my own children, reach their full potential.
“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”- Ignacio Estrada
As a teacher (and parent) I believe that establishing a respectful, secure and positive relationship with my students and kids is the first step in fostering learning and growth. When I think of the adults who left a mark on me as a kid, it’s the ones who were reliable and who showed genuine interest in me that I learnt the most from.
“No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.” – James Comer
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” – John C. Maxwell
Having worked in an inquiry based school (ACS Egham, England), and from my experiences as parent to a very curious five year old, I have also come to believe in the importance of student driven learning. Although the various science experiments and construction projects always under way in our house often go against my need for order and organization, I do see the value in them and love the excitement it creates for my daughter. Steve is very good at balancing out my need for order and organization in our home with our daughter’s need to explore and learn. I regularly come home to interesting creations they have worked on together and they are the most memorable learning experiences because the ideas and questions come from her!
“Great teachers engineer learning experiences that put students in the driver’s seat and then get out of the way.” – Ben Johnson
Other things to know about me… When I am not working on a project (like starting a blog or remodelling my house), I am a self-proclaimed lazy person. I love reading, napping and sitting around drinking coffee with like-minded people. Add food to this mix and I am even happier! Other interests include shopping, travelling, running (sometimes), walking, music, and watching my kids play. Things I hate include cooking and gardening.
